The short definition of cloud computing
Way back in the ‘90s, the image of the internet was often drawn up as a cloud, and the term kind of stuck somewhere along the way.
Cloud computing does have plenty of technical terminologies to describe its function and purpose, but really, it’s just a fancy term for the “invisible” nature of storing, communicating, and working on the internet.
The individual used to have to have the hardware on hand to store their files, images, games, etc. The “cloud” offers freedom from the need for bulky computers and a wide opened world of connection.
Types of cloud computing services
Cloud computing services are typically broken down into three main categories: SaaS (software as a service), IaaS (infrastructure as a service), and PaaS (platform as a service). Collectively, they are referred to as a cloud computing stack, because they all build upon each other.
- SaaS – Software-as-a-service is just as it sounds. SaaS services deliver software applications via the internet. Cloud service providers handle the maintenance and development of the software. Users have to connect to the internet to access and use the software provided as an SaaS.
- IaaS – Infrastructure-as-a-service brings the ability for people to rent servers, networks, and operating systems for business purposes.
- PaaS – Platform-as-a-service is what organizations use to develop their own mobile apps without the worry of underlying infrastructure problems.
Types of cloud deployment
There are also a few different classifications for how cloud services are presented and utilized. Cloud deployment can feature either public cloud, private cloud, and hybrid cloud services.
- Public cloud – Microsoft Azure: All hardware, software, and other infrastructure is managed by a provider.
- Private cloud – Cloud services used by a single business.
- Hybrid cloud – Combination of private and public cloud services.
Cloud computing and the environment
Though the environment may not be the first consideration that comes to mind concerning cloud computing services, there are still implications that should be brought to light.
Cloud computing is an excellent way to save resources such as paper and the use of excess computer machinery, but the energy to power all of this technology has residual effects on our environment.
